East Asian languages and literatures refer to the languages and cultural products of the countries located in East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. Chinese is the most widely spoken language in East Asia, with over 1 billion speakers worldwide. It is a tonal language, meaning that the tone of a syllable can change the meaning of a word. The most famous Japanese literary works include “The Tale of Genji,” “The Pillow Book,” and “The One Thousand and One Nights.”

Korean is the national language of North and South Korea and is spoken by around 77 million people worldwide. The Korean alphabet, known as Hangul, was invented in the 15th century and is considered one of the most scientific and easy-to-learn writing systems in the world. Korean literature has a long history, dating back to the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-668 CE) with “The Samguk Sagi” and “The Samguk Yusa” which are considered the oldest surviving works of Korean literature. The most famous Korean literary works include “The Story of Hong Gildong,” “The Cloud Dream of the Nine” and “The Tale of Chunhyang”.

East Asian languages and literatures are not only rich in literary tradition but also in cultural and historical significance. The study of East Asian languages and literatures can help us to understand the cultural, social, and historical contexts of the region, as well as to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the languages and literature themselves.
